Finding Comfort with the Moon

The Moon in astrology is responsible for helping us to meet our needs. Her position in the chart can tell us how effectively an individual can do that and how they go about it. The sign and house of the Moon, as well aspects she makes to other planets can tell us a great deal, including how and where a person can find comfort. We all have things that makes us feel safe, warm, and familiar and these things are essential in helping us to stay grounded and content amidst the trials and tribulations of life.

The Moon’s sign tells us how a person seeks comfort:

  • The Moon in Aries is sudden and abrupt in her instincts to seek comfort and will find that feeling through quick, intense activity, such as exercise and adrenaline rushes through risk-taking.

  • The Moon in Taurus finds comfort in traditionally relaxing environments that are slow, steady, and sensual. A warm fire, cosy blankets, the touch of a loved one, a scented candle, and rustic home cooking is ideal.

  • The Moon in Gemini finds comfort through mental stimulation, so an interesting natter with friends, reading, researching, and playing games of strategy and puzzle-solving are best for keeping her happy.

  • The Moon in Cancer needs to feel emotionally safe and secure so time spent with her loved ones, whether family, friends, or a significant other is essential in order to feel content.

  • The Moon in Leo is most content on the stage, whether literal or metaphorical. Having other people to lead, impress, and put on a show for provides comfort when she receives the recognition and admiration she craves.

  • The Moon in Virgo needs to feel clean, tidy, and organised and can only really relax when all the finer details have been accounted for. Having everything just so, according to whatever her own individual standards are, is the way to bring her contentment.

  • The Moon in Libra needs connection on an intimate level. This could be with a romantic partner or somebody else who is closely and personally tied to her. She also appreciates fine art and aesthetic. An air of harmony and civility pervades all things that comfort her.

  • The Moon in Scorpio only feels truly comfortable when facing something that most would consider dark, frightening, or unpleasant. This will be change depending on the individual’s own chart set-up but will always be something that pushes them into the very depths of emotional fixation and intrigue. All things that are considered mysterious and even suspicious can bring comfort to a Scorpio Moon when they get the opportunity to investigate.

  • The Moon in Sagittarius does not feel settled when she is too hemmed in and restrained. She must be allowed to be free and explore and going on an adventure of whichever type suits her is how she can find satisfaction.

  • The Moon in Capricorn doesn’t feel comfortable unless she is pushing towards a particular goal. She likes to be building bit by bit at all times towards something bigger, something that will provide her with status and legacy, always aware that she will one day be gone and have things to leave behind for others.

  • The Moon in Aquarius does not feel comfortable when she’s following the crowd. She can’t relax watching that series that everybody else is binging or spending time doing anything that could be considered to be trending. She needs to feel like she’s found something different, something other, and when she gets that feeling, she is content.

  • The Moon in Pisces needs to feel at peace and one with the world and she will do this in different ways, depending on the person. Whatever brings her into a sense of being connected to that which cannot be seen, either through spirituality, creativity, imagination, love, compassion, or a combination of these, is where she can find great comfort.

The Moon’s house tells us where a person can find comfort in their lives:

  • The Moon in the 1st House roots a person’s ability to find comfort within themselves. They are their own comfort and spending time on self-care and living their own life, feeling fully themselves, is what makes them feel completely at ease. She is encouraged to go out into the world and express herself to feel content. The closer to the exact angle of the Ascendant, the stronger the person will be living a generally lunar existence that translates to the seeking of comfort and nurturing in everything they do.

  • The Moon in the 2nd house gives somebody who needs material sustenance and security in order to feel safe and secure. They need to feel financially stable and surrounding by belongings that mean a lot to them. Without possessing enough in the material world, a 2nd House Moon person will feel a sense of lack that removes the ability to feel settled and comfortable.

  • The Moon in the 3rd house finds great comfort in the everyday. Daily encounters, normal routines, running errands and exploring in the local environment: all of these familiar things provide a sense of great satisfaction and relaxation.

  • The Moon in the 4th house requires privacy to feel content and spends a lot of her time at home and/or with family. She needs to feel that she can come back to where she comes from whenever she needs to, whether she sees that as their birthplace, their hometown, their house, or somewhere else. Consistent access to this place is key.

  • The Moon in the 5th house is strongly tied to fertile creative energy. She finds comfort in playing. This can manifest in different ways but always as an expression of the inner child. She may have creative hobbies, pleasures, or children that she spends time with in order to find happiness and contentment.

  • The Moon in the 6th house finds comfort through fixing problems. This may be through the kinds of chores that many find boring, such as household jobs, or possibly focus on improving health-related issues by eating healthily or working out. Fixing perceived emotional and mental problems can also factor in here, especially when they have a marked physical impact on the native’s life.

  • The Moon in the 7th house finds comfort through close relationship with another. This is quite often a romantic partner but can also be those who she works in close partnership with.

  • The Moon in the 8th house finds comfort through being looked after by another. She finds a lot of support here and being able to rely on another person is what makes her feel content. She also often enjoys that which is dark, strange, and gothic, due to the connotations of death that are connected to this house, so this can be a place that provides the Moon with unusual sustenance in comparison to most.

  • The Moon in the 9th house finds comfort in that which is bigger than herself. She needs to feel connected to the wider world and a sense of belief and meaning beyond herself. Depending on the person, this may be through religious or spiritual practice, study and accruement of knowledge, or travel to distant places. It is always about broadening the native’s horizon and perspective and knowing that there is more out there.

  • The Moon in the 10th house finds comfort through public achievement. When she is achieving and succeeding, she feels content. Whilst many can find their careers to be a distraction from relaxation and comfort, the Moon in the 10th causes the native to feel settled in the midst of professional activity.

  • The Moon in the 11th house feels most comfortable when surrounding with people. This may be through being a part of communities and groups, spending time in busy places, having a lot of gatherings with friends, or quite often performing in front of an audience or having a long list of followers. Good relations with these people is key to the native’s comfort.

  • The Moon in the 12th house needs a lot of alone time and feels the need to retreat from the world regularly. In these times of seclusion, the native may feel the need to do spiritual work, but will always in some manner turn inwards and find contentment and comfort through the cultivation of their inner world.

Aspects to the Moon alter our relationship with how we find comfort, so it is important to look at them. Note that it is best to work with aspects within 3 degrees. Conjunctions will serve to create a lack of distinction between the need to find comfort and the significations of the other planet as described below. Oppositions will create an imbalance that must be worked with between the natal Moon and her sign and house showing how she finds comfort and the positioning of the other planet and what it represents. Trines and sextiles provide a positive and automatic flow of energy between the two planets, making it easy for the Moon to partake in the other planet in order to find comfort. And finally, squares create a tension between two planets, making it necessary to allow the Moon and her needs fulfilment to take turns with the needs of the other planet as they do not mesh. Here is a guide to help you consider what planets in aspect to the Moon may encourage in relation to the need to find comfort:

  • The Sun concerns our identity and perspective on the world, as well as our general direction, focus, and awareness in life, so in connection with the Moon, there is a need to combine or balance that focus and sense of self with the ability to feel safe and secure.

  • Mercury is responsible for mental processing, communication, and transportation, so in connection with the Moon, these areas become intimately connected with what the native needs to feel settled.

  • Venus rules over harmonious union with others, as well as pleasurable activity of all kinds and all things beautiful and artistic, so these areas become needs to fulfil in connection with the Moon.

  • Mars is the planet of conflict, anger, and intense physical activity, as well as the desire to set apart on your own path and be truly individual, along with the mastery of skill and which tools you use in life. These things become connected with what brings comfort to the native in connection with the Moon.

  • Jupiter rules over growth, expansion, knowledge, goodness, and morality. He has a strong bond with the Moon and brings an abundance of things to satisfy her needs and the things that he has to offer bring her great comfort which she is grateful to receive.

  • Saturn is a hard worker and rules over that which is austere, realistic, practical, and restricted to the material realm. He is also connected to age, death, and decay, as well as things of the past, so all of these areas can bring great, albeit strange, comfort to those with a Moon-Saturn aspect.

  • Uranus is insightful and innovative, yet deeply destabilising, so there is no hope for a steady, boring life with the Moon and Uranus in connection. The native will not feel comfortable being too stagnant in one place for too long and will often suddenly seek out the exciting and unexpected.

  • Neptune is imaginative, creative, and spiritual, so in connection with the Moon, Neptune gives an individual who finds great comfort in all that is ethereal and invisible, whether conjured up within the mind or outside of it.

  • Pluto in connection with the Moon brings underworld journeys and experiences that every now and then flip the lunar concept upside down and make it hard to establish consistency in how to find comfort. Facing the shadow of this planet becomes essential in order to make the most of this aspect.
